Well, with it being tax time again I've managed to get a return of a whopping $5300!!!! And on comes the inspiration for new photography equipment and clothes (like I really need more as it is). My plans are to save half for my ski/snowboard trip to New Zealand for next years winter season (woohoo) and the other half on updating my business management and purchasing some studio strobes (most likely a couple of soft boxes, tripods and a light meter). To do this I'm going to be hiring out a bunch of gear for a few of my upcoming shoots just to see what I prefer and if it really is worth spending the $$ on it. Considering I LURVE natural light I really don't want to stear towards the predictability of pre-planned lighting. However, it is any aspiring fashion photographers 'medium' to be shooting with some kind of studio lighting so i suppose taking the plunge sooner rather than later is going to pay off.

All the above is only my spare time... as well as that I'm staying completely inspired, motivated and calm everyday and am making my way to the top (I am currently the Flight Standards Officer for CHC Helicopters in one huge and forever changing Aviation Industry - gotta keep climbing up ;P). I adore what I do for a living but there are certainly not enough hours in the day to get everything done.

Over the past six months, I've certainly figured out my dream in photography. For the last two weekends I've been working in a studio with Adelaide Photographer - Gavin Bell. He has taught me so many valuable lessons and skills and I feel I have already grown so much in just two sessions. The image above was from Sunday 21st June. The concept was a couple shoot (shooting in threes - individual portraits each then together both casual and glamour based). As I dont tend to stick to traditional portrait methods I seem to branch off and either make it high-fashion or really artistic. The above two images that I have grouped together seems to take on a campaign advertisement (possibly burberry ;P) outlook. Extremely satisfying and really just puts me on a high to think that I am capable of capturing an image that I personally think looks perfect.

Well it certainly has been a busy six months for me, and I remember when 2009 started that this year was going to be the year of my highest dedication (in all areas of my life). Business and Photography wise I've had some fantastic achievements already. Registering as a business, a range of photoshoots including model portfolios, children, impromptu sessions, lanscapes, promotional, documentation (in studio recordings - behind the scenes for Projected Twin) not to mention alot of personal work also. I've recently upgraded my camera to the Olympus E-30 which has given me a new found inspiration for capturing the moment. I've had a video/slideshow made of my photography ft music from Projected Twin, a kind of preview of what to expect of the new album. I've been working solidly on designing the CD artwork for their release aswell which has been amazing and made me realise how much I enjoy Digital Art just as much as Photography. I'll be working with Gavin Bell on a few small projects in a studio, in which he is going to be teaching me about lighting, model direction etc. On Saturday 6th June I had my first official solo exhibition for 'THE ATTIC' which will be displayed for the next month :) Made some sales and really just enjoyed being out and meeting some fantastic and inspirational models and photographers at the show. Had the chance to use my new equipment, working on a promotional photoshoot for TO DYE FOR hair salon.
The next few weeks will be dedicated to marketing strategies and promotional work for my business, I have so many children portrait sessions that I need to finalise and book in so luckily the ideas/concepts are flowing at the moment, just have to make sure I write everything down!!

I'll also be taking a trip to Melbourne in August and hope to organise a group alternative shoot while I am there. There are many people i have always wanted to work with that are based in Melbourne and it would be amazing to get them all together and see how interaction can be expressed in photography. I will also be doing the same in Adelaide with Matt James Photography, Rhiannon Lynch, Cougars and lets see if I can get a few more people together.

WOW... I didnt realise how much had happened so far until I had written it all down.

I am ecstatic with where I am in my life and am very proud of the things I've achieved thus far. I know there are rewards for hard work and dedication so if thats the case and these are the things that I've been presented with then I cant wait to see what the future holds...

my inspirations lately have largely involved high fashion and indie photography. One of my current favourites is Aneta Bartos. The dark, romantic, mysterious, raw imagery. I think the intricate feminine details and her ability to capture almost ghost-like bodies is something I greatly respect. A definite favourite and future reference:

Aside from this today I took the plunge an upgraded my camera :) Purchased an Olympus E-30 Twin Lens Kit (14-42mm and 40-150mm) which I had been saving for (hard work certainly pays off) and thought with all the escalated interest in my work of late that it would pay to get some new equipment. I've already given it a test drive and it is AMAZING. I have never felt a camera quite like it and it has so much potential and features.
I have quite a few photoshoots booked/planned for the upcoming few months and a visit to Melbourne scheduled for August 13th-15th (hopefully get a group shoot pencilled in and ofcourse, diving with sharks at the melbourne aquarium). The last month has passed so quickly and tomorrow night is 'THE ATTIC' show. I am the feature visual artist for the night which I think was a huge opportunity, and me being me, I have gone to all lengths to put on a good display. The images will be up in the Voodoo Lounge for a month so hopefully it will pull in some fresh new models and like-minded photographers.

Certainly going to be a fantastic night :)

I've determination to continually escalate, to seek out the things usually forgotten and to experience all the emotions in a poetic way that make life worth while. Tis true, you only get one shot at all this, and you also get only one first impression. Make a mark, reach a dream and, take on a challenge.

Since the beginning of 2009 I have concentrated solely on better-ing my artistic ability. I was thrown some fantastic opportunities and have had the chance of working with some very unique models. Along with this I have spent some considerable time designing and planning for the Projected Twin Debut Album Release for later this year. On the 27th March I headed into the recording studio (Xplosion Proof Motor) with Shaun of Projected Twin to capture the raw essence of recording an album. Quite often this year I have set out with my camera to capture something and it has turned out EXACTLY as I had planned. Just last week Shaun released an amazing video containing the images I captured along with the demo 'earth to world' from the album currently in production.

More great news, I have been invited to exhibit my art and photography at 'THE ATTIC' at the Crown & Anchor on the 6th June 2009. The exhibition will feature one-off prints framed to A3 size and one main feature piece of my photography encompassing the 'alternative and conceptual'. I will be the only exhibiting artist for the night, so if you spot me make sure you come up and introduce yourself. I'd love to meet others interested in collaborating artistically and visually. The exhibition of my work alone will run up until the next Attic show for the following month. Prints will be available for purchase at great rates. A programme will be available on the night. new sessions and confidence to show your own style

WOW. In less than two weeks I've done three photo-sessions and have so many more currently in progress of bookings and thinking up concepts.

I think once you put on the effort for the things you really love to do everything begins to fall into place and I feel so respected as an artist that it gives me confidence to shoot the way I like :)

Today's session was of my Niece that my sister and I had been planning for the last few days. On my sister's first birthday our father took her out to buy a special birthday dress which she has kept all this time :) We dressed little Taylah up in it and placed her in a suitcase I found at an antique store last week for $5.00 (I had originally bought this to use as a prop for another session - Yep, I've started collecting props. Uh oh!!!). She was quite happy to just sit in the suitcase playing with the books, for a little while at least.
Processed in Photoshop using some slight colour correction, lens flair is all natural.

There was a session on the 2nd May with a friend of mine,
Keri, who offered to come pose in front of my lens so I could try out something a little different from my usual style. These were taken in and beside the Botanic Gardens in Adelaide. Due to the low lighting conditions i shot with an ISO of about 800 which added quite a substantial amount of grain, however this, along with the post processing (added textures, colour correction) seems to add a medieval feel to the set. I also thought along the lines of 'the lord of the rings' or something elvish. She did an amazing job (second time I've worked with her) and I can see we are going to be working together alot more in the future.

My sessions with Ree are alwyas so much fun and such a learning curve. She is a natural model and I can always capture her amazingly. This was a rather last minute concept. As I was leaving the house I spotted my mother's fake pears in the kitchen and thought I could use them in some way or another. I remembered before this session that I didnt have too many shots depicting natural greens and really wanted to use this in some way to vary my portfolio. It was a rather dark and rainy day and we shot this in a 15 minute break between rain clouds. I seem to work better under pressure when I am threatened by bad weather or running low on time. We have more planned for the near future so I am going to be busy thinking up some new and unique concepts.

well, not only have I been greatly inspired by EVERYTHING that surrounds me lately (books, love, driving, music, images, coffee etc etc) but I have also decided that I am going to delve into the more 'crafty' side to art and start making one of a kind scrapbooks of my art/photography/poetry all hand made with products I will either make myself or purchase from etsy.com
(which is the handmade store of the world wide web - CHECK IT OUT if you havent already)

I have already got hold of these wonderful little sets to get me started :D

I think the first one I make will be for a dear artist friend of mine - Miss Nora

She knows how much I cherish her vision, her thoughts, the way she writes and the way she sees things differently. Hopefully it will not take me very long :) I think a personal touch like this is always much more wonderful than just an email. I got the idea from my boyfriend who loves to write letters and I think that is truly remarkable that people still put that effort into communication, especially when technology can do it all for you.
I have never posted anything to Germany before so hopefully it will make it all the way there without getting lost.

A few months ago I was offered an amazing opportunity - to collaborate with a very talented musician and complete the artistic side to the debut album release for PROJECTED TWIN

Projected Twin is the self written and produced music of Shaun Holton. After 2 years performing around the globe, Shaun is back in Australia working hard on Projected Twin's first studio release, due out mid 2009.

I honestly cannot find the correct words to describe to accuracy, mood and determination in this young but experienced musician. If you have not heard of them yet then get a head start because this is going to be huge!!!

meet my little brother, Mark (14 years old). I've had this idea for a couple of days now and was out searching for some kind of indoor light that I could use for portraiture, mostly conceptual. This was just a test to see how the camera works under the new lighting conditions (as I usually shoot all natural light).
Concept came from an idea of how powerful young people believe they are, often resulting in trouble and sometimes fatalities. The hype surrounding peer pressure and drinking has become a known fact to anyone in high school and the constant need to drive faster, drink harder and be the most invincible....

business updates - projected twin

Well it has been a while since I updated here with whats been happening of late. Apart from work keeping me very busy during the week (the ever changing aviation industry...and actually taking on some tasks this next two weeks that I have NEVER done before) I have put alot of time into business research and planning a new website that I hope to launch over the next six months. Whilst I have been keeping up with photography alot of my artistic concentration has been focused on brainstorming and working on the projected twin album art. The band heads into the studio during the month on March - I hope to take one week annual leave (and why not when i have over 20 paid annual leave days built up) at the end of that month so I can head into the studio for a day with them and take some in studio photos aswell as possibly some more promotional photography in the surrounding areas of the studio (which is located in the Adelaide Hills). With what time I have spare I hope to work on a few more high fashion/conceptual photo sessions for my portfolio and ofcourse I have flyers/handouts for finish designing for child portrait sessions (after writing this all down I have only just realised how much I have to work on in the coming months - scary). Its been almost two months since Christmas and I have happily and proudly saved $1400 which I am continuing on until I can decide where I want to travel to first. I had put this money aside with the intention on spending it on my car but i seem to have got out alot cheaper than I thought on mechanical issues. lucky me :) but really that all depends on whether I get the impulse to go and splurge out on a new camera. Expect some NEW photoshop multi-actions soon and possibly some texture sets if i get the time. some of my most cherished moments have included those of my niece and nephews and watching them all grow into some of the smartest children I have come across. Jared, the oldest (4 years old) has taught himself to upload photos from his digital camera onto the laptop and enhance them with borders and added graphics!! i was completely blown away especially when his mother (my older sister) had told me that she doesnt even know how to do it herself. A young Einstein. It has been a very hot week in South Australia, but after the sun started to lower yesterday we took my niece (3 and a half months old) outside to take some photos. This has become a regular thing to do when the youngins are around and I am very happy I decided to on this occassion:

i think most people underestimate the rewards of a little hard work. Some people simply go through life taking the easiest road, resulting in small bursts of euphoria, if any - mostly by interaction with their peers. I for one, seek the longer, harder road - gaining knowledge and being able to see situations with a little less rose- colour. Preparing for any downfalls. This way I can never get hurt and can never hit the ground.

Call me a dreamer if you will but that totally negates you understanding of 'a little hard work'

to me is a concept that can and will build a soul, feeding it with life, love and confidence. Teaching you value of humanity, compassion and effort. I am not talking about winning an argument, a bet or being more knowledgeable than another.... I mean being able to read you own feelings, being true to what you feel and knowing when your heart is teaching you an important lesson.

I think there are many interpretations of the word 'KARMA' and all are entitled to their opinion and how they perceive it. Over the course of the past year my head and heart have done some amazing soul searching and come to the conclusion that you can and most likely will hurt many people in your life, stomp a few dreams of your own (unintentionally) and give up on things you once thought were your whole world. Karma to me is when you don't follow the path that your soul is leading you in. The spiritual self lives deeper than any physical attribute you may posses and will live on long after you have forgotten your first kiss, the first time you saw someone cry, the first time you said 'I love you'. All these contributing to the person you are and even if you don't remember the small things they are well inside you.
I will not pretend this earth is not full of negativity, contradiction, world hunger, poverty, war, profiteers, money hungry governments and a world so far from peace that no one is even trying anymore.
Truly there is less effort in being a good person than there is in being part of the bad and even if you don't find a cure for something deemed 'incurable', don't recognize the importance of looking after the planet for the sake of the generations to come or don't get to experience the joy of marriage you will live a better life having known that a soul has its own entity and will take you to the greatest heights if you allow it..

2008 certainly brought about some new things for me, and one of those was creating resource's for photographers and other artists. I dived into the world of creating photoshop actions and released two action sets titled 'THIS IS BEAUTY - BLACK AND WHITE' as well as 'THIS IS ENHANCING'. I was blown away when I realised how much people appreciate being able to use and download them for free. The first receiving 1000+ downloads and the second receiving 800+ so far.

I have now jumped into 2009 with a bang in the creative side and have done alot of planning that will soon allow for me to host a professional based website that will contain a portfolio, resources and options to buy prints.

The next few months are going to be extremely busy for me, I am currently in the process of designing a CD package for Projected Twin which I am so excited about. It has been a long time since I worked in photoshop to create digital art/manipulations and I am very happy with the results so far.

Quite a few interesting and different photoshoots planned, one of which is with the gorgeous Meluxine and hopefully with get to work with Ree and Whipper again.

My plan is to do at least one photoshoot a month, possibly one every fortnight. Lets hope that time does not run out.
